REPORTS TO: LEAD COORDINATOR

POSITION SUMMARY: The Reading Coach assists in the creation and maintenance of a Learning Center site for youth. He/She will use best practices to provide direct instruction to students and to support after school staff and youth. The Reading Coach will report to the Lead Coordinator and will work closely with the Literacy Coordinator regarding literacy work at the center and the implementation of programs that are consistent with the Norwalk Public Schools curriculum.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Provide remedial, basic and enrichment group instruction to youth using computers and other resources.
2. Direct instruction to students.
a. Instruction will be based on short-term intervention and individual student improvement plans with an expectation of written assessments of student progress.
b. Instructional planning and delivery will be collaborative with the Literacy Coordinator and Lead Coordinator.
c. Instruction will be provided one-on-one (tutoring), in small groups, and to the whole center.
3. Staff support and Coaching
a. Model lessons.
b. Shares research and best practices.
c. Leads/facilitates study groups.
d. Works with center staff to examine student work.
e. Assists in the development of, and reviews with center staff, individual student improvement plans as needed.
4. Keeps abreast of current theory, research and best practices in language arts and literacy development.
5. Recommends appropriate children's literature.
6. Recommends titles for summer reading lists.
7. Conducts student reading assessments.
8. Works with literacy team to plan and present center-wide literacy events throughout the year.
9. Designs and manages center library.
10. Select and requisitions books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records.
11. Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools.
12. Ensures that the Learning Center functions smoothly and reliably.
13. Ensures the safety and security of personnel and computer equipment.
14. Assists in record keeping of attendance, activities, and participation.

RELATED DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists the Center Lead Coordinator as required.
2. Attends and participates in meetings as required by Lead, Literacy Coordinator and Learning Center Administrators.
3. Assists on various projects as requested by Literacy Coordinator and Administration.
4. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor and other management as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Ability to work with a wide variety of families and children from different backgrounds.
2. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to prepare accurate and comprehensive reports as needed.
3. Ability to work independently.
4. Basic knowledge of computers and peripheral equipment.
5. At least 2 years experience with basic software, i.e. word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and graphics.
6. Experience in and interest in working with diverse populations of children in a learning environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Bachelor's degree in Education.
2. CT teaching certification.
3. Two years' work experience as an Educator.
4. Computer proficiency is desirable.
5. Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
6. Must be bondable.
7. Possession of a valid Connecticut motor vehicle operator's license is preferred.
